Yet another new rear wheel!!

Tues Feb 24 – Tathra.
Spent the day in Tathra. Unfortunately the weather was cool and overcast. As I cycled along the small parade of shops I noticed a charity shop with a surfboard for $4. I bought it and went down to the sea. I needn’t have bothered.  The sea temperature had plummeted overnight from a cool 20ºC to a very cold 14ºC!! There was no-one in the water. I was soon donating the board back to the charity shop.
Wed Feb 25 – Tathra to Cathcart – 68 miles. R/T 15205 mls. 335 mls to go.
I left Tathra at 7.30am and cycled to Pambula Beach. It was still overcast and a cool 15º. I was going to stay there for the day before heading up into the mountains but as it looked like weather wasn’t going to improve I pressed on. The small town of Pambula was a short distance from the beach and I asked a local cafe owner about the road up to Wyndham. He said it was fine but mostly uphill. There was a small park where I could camp. I arrived in Wyndham around 12.30pm after c47mls. There was  a general store and a hotel/pub. Outside the store was a loaded bike – another long distance cyclist.  It turned out he was Australian, Simon, making his way to Perth.  He was cycling up into the Snowy Mountains before getting a canoe and paddling down the Murray River. He was then going to run to Perth.Brave chap!
As it was still early I decided to carry on and cycle with Simon to Cathcart. This was 20 mls of steady uphill climbing to around 900mtrs. It was cold with drizzly rain. Arriving at 5.30pm we found the only shop which was a general store. The sign outside said it stocked all things required by the locals. I asked for beers. The shop owner said she didn’t have any beers but she did have a bottle of red wine that a friend had given her about 5 yrs ago. She went to the stock room and came back with the wine. It didnt have a label and it had a cork. Neither of us had a corkscrew and the shop didn’t sell one. The owner said the wine was $5 (£2.50). We bought some other provisions for dinner and went in search of somewhere to camp. Just past the fire hut there was the village memorial hall with a covered area. We pitched our tents under the cover in case it rained. Luckily there was a toilet block with hot showers. I was feeling very cold so a hot shower was very welcome. At the back of the hall we found the bottom half of a 5 gallon drum – perfect for a fire. Some dry wood was found and we soon had a great little fire going. Dinner was fried onion, tomato with 2 tins of tuna and a tin of tomatoes mixed with black bean pasta.  The pasta looked like a bunch of twigs but tasted ok. We had to knock on a locals door to get a corkscrew to open the wine. It too was ok! The meal and wine was finished by 8pm so I went in search of some beer. I knocked on another locals door and he kindly gave us two bottles of beer. A nice evening spent in front of a camp fire drinking beer.
Thurs Feb 26 Cathcart to Bombala 13 miles. R/T 15218 mls. 322 mls to go.
As I was loading my bike in the morning I noticed a broken spoke in the rear wheel. This would have to be fixed and I hoped there might be a cycle shop in Bombala. We cycled the short 13mls to town. There was no cycle shop. I had thought I may have to leave the bike in Bombala and hitch a lift to the nearest large town of Cooma where there was a large bike shop.  But as we were having a coffee and pie in a bakery/cafe a woman told me to go and see the tyre service place just down the  street. She thought they may stock bicycle spares. They didnt but they knew a man who might. They phoned Jake who had once had a cycle shop and might have a spare 26 inch wheel. In fact he had 2. One of the tyre service guys drove out to get them. I managed to adapt one of them to fit my bike. RESULT! By this time it was 12.45pm and I decided to stop in Bombala for the night.

A day in Tathra

Mon Feb 23 – Bermagui to Tathra 29 miles. R/T 15137 mls. 403 mls (recalculated) to go.
A short hop down the coast to the small coastal town of Tathra. Yesterday  I decided to have a day off so am staying here one day. I found a small camp site with a bunkhouse. There are a few campers but the bunkhouse is empty so I have a bed in a 12 bed dorm to myself. Unfortunately today (Tuesday) is cloudy and a very cool 22º. The Weather forecasts in Australia are incredibly accurate. They tell you there is a 50% chance of rain in the morning or afternoon!
Tomorrow I will head down to Pambula where I intend to head west inland and into a more hilly area – around 1200 metres around a town called Delegate. Its now only 403 miles to Melbourne.

Back to the tie-dye hippie sixties

Sun Feb 22 Moruya to Bermagui 54miles. R/T 15108 mls. 306 mls to go.
It being Sunday the highway was reasonably quiet as I headed out of Moruya.  I stopped at the small town of Bodalla which appeared to be stuck in a 1960’s hippie tie-dye time warp ( see video). After this it was another hilly ride until I turned off to visit the historic town of Central Tilba where there was an historic hotel serving ice cold beer. Of course I stopped to soak up all the atmosphere. A few kms further on was another historic town of Tilba Tilba where the local shop had equally historic opening times i.e. closed on Sundays. I cycled on to Bermagui where I am camping tonight.

15000th mile cycled

Sat Feb 21 Ulladulla to Moruya 61mls. R/T 15054mls. 360mls to go.
Cycled out of Ulladulla along the A1 Pacific Highway. 7 mls into the journey i had clocked up my 15000th mile of cycling. After a few more miles I saw a sign that said ‘old highway’ so I turned off and started a climb. The road soon turned into a rough track and continued to climb. The road was delightful if very rutted in places.  After about 15 mls of rough riding I rejoined the main road. I had planned on trying to get to Narooma where there is a YHA hostel. I reached Bateman Bay and headed down the coast road stopping for a swim at Malua Bay. This road was hilly and slow going so I stopped when I reached Moruya. After pitching tent I went for another swim in the river. It was fine diving in but getting out was more of a problem. The rocks on the bank were covered with very sharp river oysters. Had to be very careful not to cut my feet.
These blogs are taking longer to produce. My laptop is broken and only just serves a purpose. My camera is broken – the screen does not work so I cant see what I am taking. I have to write these blogs as an email to myself using my phone. Very frustrating.

3 days camping

Wed Feb 18 Thirroul to Shoalhaven Heads 58mls.R/T 14907 mls. 507mls to go.

Cycled down a lovely dedicated cycle path for c26mls along the coast to south of Wolongong. I rejoined the highway to Kiama. This was a hilly stretch and I was glad to turn off towards Gerroa. My original plan was to stop here but there wasnt much there so cycled along 7mile beach to Shoalhaven where I camped and found a pub for Tinnie O’clock. During the night it rained – why does it always rain when I camp!?
Thur Feb 19 Shoalhaven to Cave Beach. 42mls. R/T 14949mls. 465mls to go.
A gentle ride south stopping at Nowra for a pie and coffee. This has become a bit of a ritual – having an Australian steak bacon and cheese pie. Once again I was able to turn off the highway towards Huskisson and Vincentia before reaching Hyams Beach. This has allegedly the whitest sand in Oz so I stopped to have a nice swim in crystal clear water.  There was no camping so I peddaled on to the Booderee National Park and camped at Cave Beach which was deserted. There were a few other tents and I pitched mine and went for a swim. The water has become decidedly colder as I cycle south. I had left my tent open to dry from the night before. As I returned one of the other campers introduced himself and suggested I shouldn’t leave my tent open. It was not because there were thieves,  more the threat of one of the numerouse black red-back snake making itself comfortable in my warm tent. He also warned me about the small stingrays in the shallows if I went swimming! Mmmm a bit late for that warning. I gingerly approached my tent and checked for any black thing curled up inside – nothing phew!  Around the camp area were several large Roos which didnt bother me. It was a nice evening and a dry night. There were no lights so the stars were amazing. I sat on the beach and looked up to see the Milky Way in all its glory. Would have been even nicer with a tinnie but sadly no pub nearby.
Fri Feb 20 Cave Beach to Ulladulla 44mls. R/T 14993mls. 421 mls to go.
Another undulating ride along the highway through Conjola and Milton before reaching Ulladulla. Decided to stop. It was getting very hot and I had had enough of the hills. Found a camp site by a small beach….and close to a pub. I can feel its Tinnie O’clock already.

In the footsteps of Captain Cook

Tues Feb 17th Maroubra to Thirroul – 56 mls R/T 14849mls. 565mls to go.
I left Maroubra and cycled south to Botany Bay where Captain Cook first arrived in the 18th century.  The video blog has a brief history lesson showing some of the historic locations which Cook may have visited. I then rode south but took a wrong turning and ended up in Cronulla. I was just about to cycle back when I spotted a sign for a ferry across the bay to Blundeena. This was on my route and luckily the 11.30am ferry was just about to leave. It took 20mins and after I disembarked I headed south through the Royal National park. This was a very undulating but beautiful  ride. I was glad to get to the coast road arriving in Thirroul around 4pm. I am staying with a Warmshower.org host Ian Roberts and Felicity.

Back in the Saddle to Maroubra

Mon Feb 16th  -Glenorie to Maroubra 42miles. R/T 14793 mls. 621mls to go.
I left Glenorie at 8.30am to avoid the school run traffic and rush hour into Sydney. The ride down through the outer suburbs was fine until I got to within sight of the harbour bridge. The signs for the cycle route disappeared and I wasnt allowed on the M1 over the bridge. Affter much wandering around  I eventually found the cycle path that was located on the north side of the bridge but it involved pushing my fully laden bike up a very steep incline over 5 flights of steps to the the road level. I couldnt manage it and was just about to unload the bike and carry each bag and the bike up when a security guy offered to help me push it up. A very kind offer which I accepted.  I cycled over the bridge and made my way to the Opera House for a photo. It  was c12.30pm and my bike attracted alot of attention with all 18 flags fluttering., I then had to find my way to Maroubra through the south eastern suburbs of Sydney arriving just after 3pm. I am staying with Pat and Anne King who are friends of Pat and Bertha’s. Tomorrow I head for Thirroul further down the east coast.

Back in the saddle tomorrow

Sun Feb 15 – Glenorie
Have delayed my start to the final leg of my cycle ride to Melbourne until tomorrow.  Have had a nice few days in Glenorie seeing my relatives who I hadnt seen since 2001. Also spent 3 days on the Northern beaches – Newport, Bilgola, Palm Beach, Avalon, Manly and Dee Why. You are certainly spoilt for choice in Sydney. Celebrated my birthday at a very nice restaurant above Whale Beach called Johnas. Had a very nice pressy from my good friends back in Newport – an ultimate aerobatic flight experience -I now cant wait to get back. Will be awesome.
Tonight was spent with most of my Australian relatives at a delightful Thai restaurant.

Last blog till Feb 15th

Sat Feb 7th Dudley (Newcastle) to Wamberal 50mls. R/T 14696 mls.
Chris and Bev were marvellous hosts. I was able to get my rear wheel fixed and set off around 11am.
It was a nice ride from Dudley along the Fernleigh track before I had to join the Pacific Highway.  I was able to leave the highway for the coast road at Catherine Hill Bay where I had a quick swim. After lunch I carried on to Norah Heads for yet another dip arriving at Wamberal around 5pm. I was staying with Rod and Deb Lennon who had a fabulous house overlooking the beach. That night Rod cooked me a Kangaroo steak which was delicious.
Sun Feb 8th Wamberal to Glenorie 55 mls. R/T 14751 mls. 663 mls to go (recalculated)
My remaining mileage has been recalculated to Melbourne.
Today was a hard ride mainly up many hills  along the old Pacific Highway. Thankfully it was very quiet with the exception of quite a few motor bikers who now like the scenic drive. I used the Berowra ferry to cross over to Glenorie where I will now be staying until Feb 15. I have an aunt and cousins who live here. This is the last blog until I recommence my ride south to Sydney and onto Melbourne. Rejoin me on Feb 15.
