About Jeremy Reed

Jeremy Reed

I am a 59 year old married man with a very understanding wife.
Since sailing round the world in 2009/10  I have been seeking another major challenge.  In 2011 I decided to cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End. Since my bike and I lived in Newport Essex I  thought why not cycle up to John O’Groats and after completing the ride to Lands End why not cycle home – a Newport to Newport ride.  And so the c900 miles JOG to LE became a c2500mile round trip. Cycling alone and unsupported was a great way to see England Scotland and Wales. I met so many kind and interesting people on the way although cycling alone can be very lonely at times.
It was this trip that gave me the idea to cycle further afield and explore other countries. I looked at cycling the Americas and cycling round the world and then thought why not cycle from where I live in Newport Essex to Newport Beach in Sydney Australia – another Newport to Newport adventure. I have relatives in Sydney who I have not seen for many years  so it would be an ideal goal.  In October 2012 the goal was decided and planning the route and logistics started to take shape. However in August 2013 my youngest daughter Cathryn decided to move from the UK to Melbourne Australia so I have now decided to add another c670miles to my ride and cycle down from Sydney to meet her in Melbourne.

  5. Hi Jeremy, steve here from Barrelli Ski. Hils gave me the link and so I thought I’d send a quick word! Fantastic trip, a great adventure. All I can add is that when I cycled 10 miles the other day, I couldn’t sit down for several hours! Your arse must be the thickness of a rhinos! Good luck with it all and if you make it back for the ski trip you can’t just sit in the hot tub all week. Cheers, Steve

    • Thanks Steve.Leave my arse out of it! I am having a great time. I am amazed at how friendly people are in every country I cycle through. far more friendly than even cycling in England. Keep up the cycling. You will get used to it. Regards jeremy

Hi Jeremy, I think I was chatting with your wife in Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens whilst having coffee with my miniature poodle Florence this morning. I was telling her that I came from Bishops’s Stortford originally and she said she came from Newport, many coincidences as my father went to Newport Grammar school back in 1930! I was intrigued to find out more as she told me you were cycling from UK to Aus, how fantastic. I just googled “Newport man cycles to Australia” and found your story. Your wife is lovely and I really enjoyed our chat.

    Happy cycling Marie Mander.

Hello Jeremy, Are you happy to be home again? Maybe the whole world is your home, haha! I’ve met you in the cafe in Hoek van Holland and………. you are in the newspaper with a photo and a little article I wrote. Maybe you can not read Dutch, but there are only good words about you in the text. You can read this newspaper online till thursday. If you google: “Hoekse krant” you’ll find it. page 7 is where you can find yourself. You can click on the article to make it bigger.
Have a good life, Jeremy, it was very nice to meet you!
    Judith.
